Inviting comparison to Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 cult hit Near Dark, and derivative of The Hitcher and a half-dozen other films, The Forsaken is nevertheless a gritty little B movie that succeeds on its own modest terms. There’s nothing new here, and the film’s vampire folklore is only marginally intriguing, but if you’re attracted to nihilistic tales that unfold in the middle of nowhere, you’ll appreciate this bloody dose of low-budget horror. It all starts when Sean (Kerr Smith) agrees to drive a vintage Mercedes from Los Angeles to Florida, where he’ll deliver the car and attend his sister’s wedding. His troubles begin when he picks up Nick (Brendan Fehr), a nomadic “hunter” on the trail of a small cadre of vampires (a.k.a. “the Forsaken”) who’ve been spreading their blood-sucking virus since medieval times. Nick’s mission: Stop the virus by killing the vampires on sacred ground, using a rescud victim (Izabella Miko) as telepathic bait (telepathy being one of the movie’s vampiric innovations).
It’s basically a road movie with car chases, nudity, and plenty of grisly violence. It’s not as stylish or witty as Near Dark, but after two decades in the B-movie biz, writer-director J.S. Cardone knows what he’s doing, and while the movie’s never really fresh, it’s also never stupid. The young cast plays it straight (which is good), and Jonathan Schaech is a standout as the lead vampire. It’s anybody’s guss why the vampires manifest themselves as desert-dwelling punks in a rusty Dodge Charger, but hey, sometimes you just gotta go with the (blood) flow. –Jeff Shannon

David Alden’s production of Wagner’s grand romantic opera was recorded at the National Theatre in Munich, with Bayerische Staatsoper, in September 1994. Shot over three days by leading opera director Brian Large, this recording benefits from the ideal technical conditions made possible by a closed session. Alden, one of the most iconoclastic interpreters of classicalopera, stirs up the visionary, erotic, and archetypal elements in Wagner’s work. The cold, forbidding aspect of the stylized and predominantly monochrome sets and costumes by Roni Toren and Buki Shiff manifests the strait-jacket of tradition from which Tannhauser seeks to free himself in this powerful opera. 186 minutes.

Plunder of the Sun plays like a low-budget merging of two Bogart classics, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Maltese Falcon. Wiseguy Al Colby (Glenn Ford) finds himself short of funds in Havana, but a mysterious antiquities trader (Francis L. Sullivan, doing his best Sydney Greenstreet) enlists Colby to transport a package from Cuba to Mexico. The package is a piece in a puzzle that could lead to millions in ancient gold, possibly buried in the elaborate ruins of Zapotecan temples–if Colby can survive the other adventurers jockeying to get the stuff. Director John Farrow keeps the story moving and the shadows at a satisfyingly noirish level even if the material never rises to anything like classic status, while Glenn Ford provides a fitting crul streak for his nobody-makes-a-sucker-out-of-me hero. This was one of two movies Farrow made in Mexico that year for John Wayne’s Batjac production company, the other being Hondo. The balled-up plot, international gaggle of eccentric performers (most colorfully Wayne regular Sean McClory), and somewhat chintzy location shooting call to mind another globe-trotting movie of that era, Orson Welles’ Mr. Arkadin, and this movie even shares actress Particia Medina with that picture. –Robert Horton

Margarethe von Trotta came into her own as one of the most important voices of the New German Cinema with her second film, Sisters, or the Balance of Happiness, a work she once described as “a soul painting.” Maria (Jutta Lampe), a coldly efficient executive secretary to a big-wheel tycoon, tries to impress her own ambitions and drive for success on her fragile sister, a sensitive art student who becomes smothered by Maria and takes her own life. Evocative compositions and von Trotta’s growing visual style give a cinematic dimension to the exploration of the social web, and Lampe’s intense performance centers the film as her goal-oriented professional is finally forced to confront herself and find the elusive “balance of happiness” that will bring her in touch with her dead sister.
