Filmmakers often remark that it’s just so hard to make a bad picture that few would take on the challenge if they weren’t so naive. Steve Martin’s Bobby Bowfinger is cut from that pattern, one of those sweet, indomitable operators of Hollywood who seem to be descended directly from Ed Wood (of Plan 9 from Outer Space infamy). To resurrect his ramshackle existence, Bowfinger opts to film his accountant’s sci-fi spectacular, Chubby Rain, about aliens invading in raindrops. The snag is he needs to attach action megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), an actor so paranoid he counts the K’s in scripts to uncover possible Ku Klux Klan influnces. When his effort fails, Bowfinger hits on an ingenious scheme to film Ramsey without his knowledge, throwing his actors at the hapless star whenever he appears in public. Only Kit begins to believe he’s being hounded by aliens for real, and runs hysterically to his guru (Terence Stamp) at a Scientology-clone group called MindHead, where people walk around in fine suits wearing white pyramids on their heads. Deprived of his star, yet not to be undone, Bowfinger hires a look-alike, Jiff (also Eddie Murphy), to fill in. The tone of the picture is sometimes flat, rather than deadpan, but that’s nitpicking. The farce is quick and engrossing, and populated with terrific performances, especially by Eddie Murphy, whose dual role as Kit and Jiff showcases his character-building gift, and by Martin, whose Bowfinger, part con man and part would-be visionary, manages to capture your sympathies. Heather Graham’s would-be actress cheerfully sleeps her way to the top like she knows she’s supposed to, and Christine Baranski plays her shopworn method actor with myopic self-absorption. –Jim Gay

Twenty years after its debut, the OVA Outlanders is being rereleased with a new English dub: fans chose the cast in an online vote. Nerdy 19-year-old photographer Tetsuya (voiced by Sean Schemmel) watches in horror as alien princess Kahm (Liza Jacquline) invades Earth and dismembers soldiers. Kahm falls for Tetsuya and decides to marry him, despite the objections of her father the Emperor, her best friend Battia (Rebecca Soler), and lupine captain Geobaldi (Schemmel again, using a much lower pitch). Tetsuya wins over Battia and Geobaldi through his resolve, and the quartet defeats the Emperor in battle through a daring (and not fully explained) maneuver of Geobaldi’s. This featherweight jiggle fest borrows heavily from Urusei Yatsura: like Lum, Kahm has green hair, horns, a miniscule bikini–and the power to zap Tetsuya when he annoys her. The scenes of the formidably stacked Battia in bed with the wolf-like Geobaldi may disturb the squamish–and delight Furries. Shanghai was a free port that did not require papers for entry, and became the “last resort” to find a safe haven from the terror of the Nazis. Filmmakers Joan Grossman and Paul Rosdy have assembled a remarkable film out of rare footage. Sensational 8mm and 16mm home movies intimately portray the daily life of refugees and life on the streets of Shanghai. Refugee family films document the month-long ship voyage to Shanghai, while films by Viennese emigrant Charles Bliss and American Eric Schmidt create a rich cinematic texture. Combined with Japanese films and outtakes of American newsreels, this is a poignant and beautiful journey.

Actor Matthew Broderick (WarGames, Ferris Buller’s Day Off) offered up this, his 1996 directorial debut, as a whimsical romance and a tribute to an extraordinary scientist. Broderick plays the brilliant and eccentric Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman in a story based on his early life. The fun-loving Feynman and his young bride Arlene, played by Patricia Arqutte (Tru Romance) enjoy their courtship and young married life in New York until Feynman is called away to New Mexico to participate in the Manhattan Project and the development of the hydrogen bomb. Their storybook romance is further complicated when Arlene discovers she is seriously ill, and Feynman must confront not only the morality of his participation in the development of the bomb but the nature of life and death and the love he has for his wife. A nice, small sweet romance that aims low but scores high, Infinity is a quirky but poignant love story and a fine directorial debut. –Robert Lane

A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon’s cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors’ discovery of the Earth’s predicament and to each character’s discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice–all in about an hour.
Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the “Outer Senshi.” This slightly older, more mature group of young women–Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto–join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Du to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. The DVD is of the uncut version but also has the English language dialogu. –Liane Thomas
