Blaxploitation movies deserve a good spoofing, and Undercover Brother tweaks the subgenre with a few good laughs. But what might have been an Afro-centric Austin Powers (adapted by John Ridley from his Internet film series) is instead a lackluster comedy with one basic joke: “Whitey”–personified as a faceless corporate despot known as “the Man”–has the power, but black folks have soul. With enough funk to make Shaft look passe, Eddie Griffin plays “U.B.” with an oversized ‘fro and a firm grasp of comedic possibilities. He’s recruited by the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. (an all-black justice leagu) to foil the Man’s plan to derail a Colin Powell-like presidential candidate (Billy Dee Williams), and U.B.’s undercover exploits keep the slim plot moving. Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris are gamely ridiculed as token white allies, and it’s all in good fun as director Malcolm D. Lee (Spike’s cousin) finds room for mild jolts of relevant social commentary. –Jeff Shannon

When Naomi (Tianah Patterson), a fine, young sexy thing from South Central L.A., is invited to Palm Springs by her rich Uncle Bob to house sit for the weekend, she jumps at the chance to get out of the hood. But little Miss Naomi doesn’t believe in traveling alone, so she recruits three of her best friends to join her for the weekend for a Slumber Party; enter the hood’s finest girls: pepper-spray-packing ghetto girl Neeci (Nasheina Batson), pampered Brittany (Sheena Player) and not-too-bright Alicia (Kanary). When these four girls get together, there’s no telling what’s about to happen! Uncle Bob’s neighbor, Rufus (Hakim “Young Hak” Muhammad), spies on Naomi and her fly friends, determined to be a part of their “Bad Girl Party.” He teams up with South Central’s infamous twins, Gary (TaettaChip) and Cary (Tyrell Ellis), who have a reputation for turning everything upside down wherever they go. Now all the three of them have to do is figure out how to find a way into a party where there are “no boys allowed!”

Through the intervention of a wood nymph and a wise scholar, the enchanting Belen can choose to live in any fairytale she chooses. This mecha adventure suffers from both too much story and too little, and often feels like pieces of other series strung together. Shinji’s troubled relationship with his father is one of the key elements of Evangelion; most of the main characters in Brain Powered have massive family problems that complicate the story line without really illuminating their motivations. One disquieting aspect of these subplots is the maniacal Jonathan’s revelation that he’s slept with both Yuu’s sister and mother. Things are further complicated by the arrival of several new characters, including Kant, a boy genius who looks like a girl genius, and Nakki, who appears at the Novis Nova with a Grand Cher and three Brain Powereds in tow. After a battle with his sister, who blames him for her loss of status within Orphan, Yuu ends up stranded in the frozen north. He meets a dying girl who provides life lessons about Brain Powereds and not fighting with hatred–as they’re being attacked by Jonathan in a fancy Grand Cher. The Baronz Cher belongs to Baron Maximilian, who wears a mask that resembles Frieze’s in Gundam Wing and talks like the Zentraedi in Robotech. The mecha pilots of Novis Nova continu fighting Orphan but there’s no urgency to the threat, even when the gargantuan structure begins to rise from the depths of the Pacific, causing tsunamis. Two-thirds of the way through the 26-episode series, there’s no indication where the story is headed. Rated 13 Up: Violence, profanity, ethnic stereotypes. –Charles Solomon
